Complete with a twang from her hometown of Benton, Arkansas, Barbara Hubbard arrived in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1954 and continues to leave a legacy in the community and an impression on the entertainment industry throughout the globe.
Many people in today’s entertainment industry, both onstage and behind the scenes, are proteges of “Mother” Hubbard, a nickname given to her by Bob Hope after witnessing firsthand how she took care of all of her students. Tour accountants, tour managers, set designers, agents, promoters, venue managers, and onstage talent have all received the guidance and financial support of this one-woman powerhouse. Whether playing gin rummy with John Wayne or swapping jokes with Bob Hope and Red Skelton, Barbara was always in the game.
Mother Hubbard’s focus has always been on student education. She has provided scholarship funds to hundreds of students through her ACTS program. Every penny raised on all the concerts she has promoted has gone to support various scholarships through Barbara Hubbard’s ACTS Scholarship Program.
Although she retired as General Manager of the Pan Am Center in 1996, Mother Hubbard keeps going and going. Through her ACTS scholarship fund, she has raised and given over $750,000 in scholarship funds for NMSU students. Scholarships for students in music, theater, and the hotel and tourism field. Her goal is to reach $1 million.
